Repair & Maintenance
Will you tell me if the door should not be used?
Yes, plainly and at the door. A slack or frayed cable, a gap in a spring coil, a door hanging crooked, a bracket pulling out of the framing or an opener that fails the reversal test are the kinds of findings that put an item in the stop-use group. When that happens you see the reason yourself, the door is left resting in a safe spot with the opener unhooked, and the fix is written up and quoted so it can be booked. Can a tune-up make my noisy door quieter?
Usually, yes, and often dramatically. Most garage door noise comes from dry hinge pins, dry roller bearings and hardware that vibration has loosened, and those three are exactly what a tune-up addresses. Some noise comes from parts that have worn, such as a roller gone out of round or a chain that has stretched, and the technician tells you which sounds were settled by maintenance and which point to a part worth replacing, with a separate quote for that. Why did the door come off its track in the first place?
The usual causes are an impact from a vehicle, a lifting cable that broke or slipped off its drum, ice holding the door to the floor while the opener pulled, an obstruction under the door, worn rollers that no longer hold in the rail, or track brackets that have loosened from the wall. Finding which one applies is the first part of the visit, because the reset is only durable once the cause is corrected. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
Why is the bottom section handled differently from the others?
The bottom section is where the lift cables attach, through the bottom brackets at each end, and those cables are under the full pull of the springs. Before the brackets come off, the springs have to be unwound or unhooked so the cables go slack. The bottom section also carries the seal retainer and astragal that meet the floor. After the new section is in, the springs are re-tensioned and the balance reset. Garage Door Panel Replacement

How many rollers does a garage door have?
A standard four-section residential door has ten: one at each end of the three hinge lines between sections, one in each of the two top fixtures and one in each bottom bracket. A five-section door carries twelve, and taller doors more still. The technician counts and inspects every one, because replacing the full set together keeps the door's travel and sound even from side to side. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Do the rollers get replaced with the hinges?
They are checked every time and replaced when they need it. The roller stem sits in a tube on the edge hinge, so when that hinge comes off the roller is already in hand, and fitting a new one adds a minute. A wheel that is cracked, flat-spotted or grinding on its bearing is the sort of thing that strained the hinge, so leaving it would ask the new hinge to carry the same load. What if the car hit the door as well as the track?
Then the assessment covers both. A bumper that creases the track usually dents or bows the bottom section, and can bend the bottom bracket, the roller stem and a hinge. The technician follows the impact through those parts, straightens or replaces the track, and explains separately what the section and its hardware need, whether that is a strut, a bracket, or a replacement panel. The door is only put back to work once the whole path is sound. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
Does the new cable have to match the old one exactly?
It has to match the door, which may not be the same thing if the old cable was wrong. Length is set by the door height, the drum profile and the lift type; diameter and construction by the door's weight. A cable that is a little long overlaps on the drum and wears; one that is short leaves the door out of level. The technician measures the door and the drum rather than trusting the old cable. Openers & Access
Why does my door go back up when I try to close it?
The opener believes something is in the way. Either the photo-eye beam near the floor was broken, misaligned or blocked, or the door met more resistance than its force setting allows, often from a frozen seal, stiff rollers or a travel limit set slightly too long so the door hits the slab. The indicator light on the head unit usually tells which of the two it was, and the technician confirms it by testing rather than guessing. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
How much slack should the chain have?
It is a measurement, taken with the door closed and disconnected from the trolley. At the middle of the rail the chain should sit at the height the opener's own manual specifies for its rail shape, since the figure is not the same across makes. The two nuts on the trolley set and lock it. With the door reconnected and closed, some droop appears; that is expected as long as the measurement returns when the door is open. Is a belt drive harder to repair than a chain drive?
No, just different. The belt is lighter, runs dry and is replaced as one length with a clip, where a chain has links and takes grease. The tensioning at the trolley works the same way on both, and the sprocket, idler and trolley are similar parts. What a belt drive rewards is care with tension and a straight rail, because it is chosen for quiet and shows any fault as noise. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
My garage ceiling is low and full of storage. What are my options?
Two good ones. A low-headroom kit lets a standard operator work where the open door sits close to the ceiling. Going further, a jackshaft unit mounts on the wall where the spring shaft ends and drives the door from there, so the whole ceiling stays empty for shelving, a mezzanine or a car lift. That route needs a door on torsion springs and a little clearance beside the shaft, which the technician measures on site. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
How is installation timing planned?
Timing is set after the door specification, site preparation, access and delivered components are confirmed. A straightforward opening and a project needing framing, electrical coordination or unusual track geometry have different sequences. The proposal should identify prerequisites and installation scope so the visit is scheduled around a ready opening and a verified door package. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
Why are new springs selected for the replacement door?
Counterbalance springs are chosen around the completed door's weight, height, track arrangement and intended travel. Insulation, steel skins, windows and reinforcement all contribute to that load. A spring combination from a different assembly may provide unsuitable torque even when it physically fits. Matching the counterbalance to the ordered door supports manageable manual movement and orderly cable travel. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
Is a building permit needed for replacement?
A like-for-like door change and a project involving structural alteration are different situations. Enlarging an opening, combining bays, replacing framing, or completing work already covered by a permit can introduce municipal review. Ask the local building department about the specific scope, and keep its direction with the door selection and installation documents. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Can the opening be widened for a larger door?
A wider opening can be a separate renovation project, but it requires more than changing the door order. The header, side framing, exterior finish, electrical items and supporting loads need appropriate review, along with any permit or design requirements. Once that work has defined and prepared the final opening, the carriage-house door can be measured and specified against stable dimensions. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
